Habitat for Humanity works in communities across the globe, and locally we build throughout eastern Connecticut.

Our vision is to make a difference in the lives of others, fulfill the dream of home ownership with an affordable mortgage and help eliminate sub-standard housing in Eastern Connecticut.

We view our work as successful when it transforms lives and promotes positive and lasting social, economic and spiritual change within a community; when it is based on mutual trust and fully shared accomplishment; and when it demonstrates responsible stewardship of all resources entrusted to us.

There is proof that homeownership can promote civic engagement, triggering neighborhood revitalization efforts, which result in stronger communities overall. When we build Habitat homes on vacant lots, we improve the neighborhood while simultaneously creating affordable housing. We often hire local subcontractors, keeping jobs local and investing in the community.

Then there are the teams of volunteers that join together to make a dream come true by investing thousands of hours on the build sites. The resulting affect is a tangible impact on a neighborhood. People are given the opportunity – future homeowners and volunteers alike – to realize their potential, to experience how powerful their actions can be, and the collective difference we make.

“I’ve been volunteering for Habitat (of eastern Connecticut) since 1992,” says Rich Basham. “I love doing it for the homeowner, and it’s a matter of faith for me.”

We believe that the faith that guides each of us blesses our communities with a sense of connectedness, pride, and possibility. Your support of our mission this week enables us to serve more local families, increasing their chances to thrive by building stronger communities one Habitat home at a time.

Your support can take on many definitions: financial contributions, donation of time by committing to a long-term volunteer schedule, advocate for Habitat by sharing with others through social media and outreach, serving on committees, shopping at our ReStore locations and donating furniture and building supplies, too.

Stable, affordable housing is a key determinant of health. The house and neighborhood where one grows up impacts the health and longevity of one’s life.

Having a safe, decent, stable, affordable home also impacts a child’s success in school. However, many Americans live outside of safe, stable neighborhoods.

In order to create change that leads to an improved quality of life, community efforts focus on three foundational outcomes:

  1. Sense of community: Identifying with the neighborhood, feeling connected and supporting one another.
  2. Social cohesion: Being willing and able to work together.
  3. Collective action: Sustaining ongoing projects and advocacy efforts.

Focusing on the three foundational outcomes increases motivation and capacity to overcome barriers to sustainable change.
