Habitat helps families increase their financial security.

We invest in people’s futures when we invest in housing, which simultaneously increases economic opportunity for Habitat families.

Our homeownership program is multi-faceted and can take up to two years to complete. The most recognizable is the sweat equity hours that all future Habitat homeowners complete. These hours are not only spent helping to build their home and the homes of other future Habitat homeowners, but also education programs and workshops that include financial education. Combined, the homeownership program helps families build a solid foundation for long-term personal success.

Habitat keeps homes affordable through pathways such as low- or zero-interest mortgages, volunteer labor and greater energy efficiency in our new construction homes. Donated building materials help lower building overhead for each Habitat home. The money a family saves on utilities, mortgage interest and other housing expenses can be invested in training, education and other enrichment opportunities. This is the first time that many of our families finally get a break from living paycheck to paycheck. Savings accounts and education can finally be considered with living expenses lower than those of substandard and often dangerous rental housing.

“At a time of growing income and wealth inequality, economic mobility provides a frame through which to consider the potential of housing policy to change the trajectories of individuals and communities.”

— Urban Institute’s Pamela M. Blumenthal and John R. McGinty

By donating to Habitat this week, you are directly connected to our mission, our Future Homeowners and their children. Your support helps bolster the economic opportunities that Habitat homeowners experience for the first time. What an incredible gift that is to a family. Your support can take on many roles: financial contributions, donation of time by committing to a long-term volunteer schedule, advocate for Habitat by sharing with others through social media and outreach, serving on committees, shopping at our ReStore locations and donating furniture and building supplies, too.
