Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut: Building More Than Homes
Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut has long been a pillar of support for active-duty service members, veterans, first responders, and military families in our region. Through innovative programs like the R.E.D. Friday Veteran’s Build, which was launched in September 2023 to honor the anniversary of September 11, Habitat has created a space for the military community to connect, volunteer, and contribute positively to society. These builds have grown into a monthly initiative, accumulating over 125 volunteer hours since the first event, with involvement from various groups like the US Navy Sub School, USO, and more.
The organization’s partnership with the US Navy Sub School in Groton is particularly noteworthy, providing mentoring opportunities for sailors through group activities, volunteer work in Habitat’s ReStores, and on construction sites. This collaboration even extends to special projects such as the planned US Navy All Women’s Build, demonstrating Habitat’s commitment to inclusivity and empowerment within the military community.
One active-duty volunteer expressed the significance of such involvement, highlighting how volunteering not only strengthens community ties but also enhances leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills—qualities that are valued in both military and civilian life. The sense of unity and purpose fostered by Habitat’s initiatives goes beyond building homes; it builds stronger communities.
